District Spotlight: Spencer Johnson, Family Facilitator for Irving Elementary School
Exploring Family Engagement
An interview with Spencer Johnson, Family Facilitator for Irving Elementary School, Bloomington Public Schools District 87
District 87 has been working with the Illinois MTSS Network for several years, most recently collaborating with Network Capacity Coach Kim Spiker. District 87 identified attendance and family engagement as top priorities, so we reached out to one of the district’s family facilitators to learn more.
Can you describe your experience working with the IL MTSS Network? How have Network coaches partnered with and supported your district?
My experience with the IL MTSS Network has been great! I feel that one of the main reasons I have been able to benefit from the IL MTSS Network is because of the structured and data driven approach they provide when to supporting students. Through our collaboration with the IL MTSS, we have refined our tiered intervention strategies to better identify and address attendance barriers.
Are there any highlights or advice from your MTSS journey that you’d like to share with other districts?
One of the key takeaways from my MTSS journey is the importance of relationship building. Attendance interventions are most effective when students and families trust that the school is invested in their success. My advice to other districts is to view attendance as more than just a data point, but more so an opportunity to build meaningful connections that empower students and families.
Can you share a little about why your district chose to focus on strengthening family engagement? Why is family engagement important to successful school improvement and MTSS implementation?
Family engagement is at the core of our mission because we recognize that students thrive when they have a strong support system both at school and at home. By strengthening relationships with families, we create a shared sense of responsibility for student success. Engaged families are more likely to collaborate with school staff, reinforce the importance of attendance, and access available resources.
What are your top tips for increasing Family Engagement at the district and building level?
- Clear and Consistent Communication: Ensure that families receive timely and accessible information about attendance policies, available resources, and ways to get involved.
- Building Trust: Foster relationships with families through positive interactions, rather than only reaching out during challenges.
- Engagement Opportunities: Host school events, workshops, and activities that encourage family participation and create a welcoming school environment.
